School Based Bespoke Training

Description
In addition to training opportunities outlined within this brochure, Governors can commission school based or cluster based development opportunities that support them in their roles. Governor training packages include any 3 training programmes identified for Governors within this brochure, plus 2 school based/bespoke sessions as part of the ‘clerking, advice and support’ SLA or access to all identified centre based training
sessions and 1 school based/bespoke session, when signed up to the ‘comprehensive’ SLA package.

Please see below suggested list of school/cluster based development opportunities available, which will be delivered by either Governor Service or other Local Authority officers:

  • Preparation for Ofsted, to include Governors role in school self-education, school improvement planning and leadership and management
  • Tracking and Monitoring Pupil Progress, including the effective use of Pupil Premium
  • Behaviour for Learning
  • Health and Safety and Emergency Planning
  • Pay Policy, Performance Related Pay and Performance Management/Appraisal
  • Effective Learning Environments and the importance of Learning Walks
  • How to become a Dyslexia Friendly School or an ASD Friendly School

School Governors

Inspection Dashboard Workshop for Primary School Governors

Description
During this session governors will have an opportunity to become familiar with the Ofsted Inspection Dashboard. The dashboard is accessible to both schools and inspectors through the new Analyse School Performance portal (RAISEonline replacement).

Governors will:
  • Become familiar with the Inspection Dashboard for Primary Schools
  • Have an opportunity to analyse their school data to enable them to understand their schools performance
  • Have time to identify the headlines and key questions about their school performance
Impact Statement
Governors will have a good understanding of the new Inspection Dashboard, as well as be able to ask challenging questions about performance and progress.

They will be able to identify key areas to support self-evaluation and school improvement planning

Please note: Places on this course are limited.
Governors who do secure a place are asked to bring a colour copy of their own schools Ofsted Inspection Dashboard which can be downloaded by the school from the Analyse School Performance portal within the Secure Access site.

Headteacher Performance Management

Description
This course will provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the statutory requirements for Headteacher Performance
Management and will include:

  • Overview of statutory guidance
  • Organisational details of the Headteacher Performance Management process, including the role of the external advisor and the requirements for target reviews
  • Exploration of best practice target setting including how these should link to the school improvement priorities and outcomes for students
  • Information on actions following Headteacher Performance Management reviews and the role of the Pay Committee in this process

This course will reflect the statutory requirements for maintained schools in relation to Headteacher Performance Management, which is recommended best practice for all schools to follow.

  • Will be able to ensure that the targets are reviewed regularly
  • Will have the confidence to challenge the senior leadership to evidence that performance management targets have been set for all staff and that they are impacting on outcomes for pupils

The Role of the Safeguarding Governor

Description
This course will investigate the specific and important role of the Safeguarding Governor, ensuring:
  • the legal requirements are in place and are known and understood by all staff and adults working in your school
  • the expectations of OfSTED are being met and that governors can provide evidence of their compliance
  • the expectations from Keeping Children Safe in Education 2019 are fully understood and embedded
Impact Statement
Governors will:
  • have a clear understanding of their role
  • have the knowledge and expertise to hold the school to account for ensuring that the policies and processes are in place and that they are being consistently applied
  • have a good understanding of what they should monitor and challenge and how that is reported back to the full Governing Board

Induction Training for New Governors

Description
This course provides an opportunity for Governors to develop a strong focus on the three core strategic functions below:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent

Complaints Training for Governors

Description
The course will support governors to understand their role in managing all complaints and concerns raised about their school. An effective complaints policy that is understood by the school community will help to ensure that any concerns or issues are dealt with effectively and a quick and positive outcome is secured.

Description
This course will investigate the specific and important role of the SEN governor, ensuring:

Maintaining Governor Excellence

Description
This course is aimed at governors who have served at least one full term of office (4 years) and will provide an:
  • overview of the most recent statutory responsibilities
  • overview of how to ensure the school leadership, including governance, is fit for purpose and meets expectations from the LA, DfE and stakeholders
  • opportunity to revisit the basics of the role and responsibilities of governance

Safer Recruitment

Description
This workshop is the Safer Recruitment Consortium accredited, updated version of the Safer Recruitment training for Headteachers, school Governors and other staff who are likely to sit on interview panels or appoint staff. It is still a requirement for every school appointments panel to include at least one member who has completed the Safer Recruitment training. Course content provides clear explanations of government guidance regarding the safer recruitment process. It also includes an update of the most recent legislation changes (i.e. the Keeping Children Safe in Education – Sept 2019, DBS, Disqualification by Association and other pre-employment checks) that affect Safeguarding and Child Protection. It is recommended that you refresh your training every 5 years.

  • Will be safer and have safeguarding needs met in a more appropriate and timely manner

  • Will have an awareness and understanding of offender behaviour
  • Will be able to identify the key features of staff recruitment that helps deter or prevent the appointment of unsuitable people

Managing Governor Panels

Description
This course will support governors to manage panels for Grievance, Disciplinary, Pay Appeal of Exclusion by:
  • explaining when and why a panel should be established and what role they have within the agreed school policy
  • explaining how the panel should be managed including the timescales for information and what evidence should look like
  • suggesting the type of questions that should be asked
  • providing guidance on how the final outcome should be reported

Understanding the Governors role in Headteacher Performance Management and The Pay Committee

Description
The Pay and Pay Appeals Committees are statutory committees and are responsible for all pay decisions outside of the cost of living increases. The committees must be agreed by the Governing Board who will delegate the role to the named governors serving on the committees. This course will provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the statutory requirements for maintained schools in relation to Headteacher Performance Management (HPM) and teaching staff pay decisions, which is recommended best practice for schools to follow.

The course will include:

  • An overview of statutory guidance for HPM
  • Organisational details of the HPM process, including the role of the external advisor and the requirements for target reviews
  • Exploration of best practice target setting including how these should link to the school improvement priorities and outcomes for students
