Pre Key Stage standards moderation workshop

Description
During this session delegates will have an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the KS1 and KS2 Pre Key Stage standards.


The session will include:
  • An overview of the KS1 and KS2 Pre Key Stage standards for reading, writing and mathematics
  • The opportunity to moderate with other schools against the new Pre Key Stage standards

Delegates will be required to bring along samples of work from pupil(s) at their school to moderate with colleagues against the Pre Key Stage standard statements.

When considering samples of work to bring delegates may wish to focus on boarderline pupils, including those who may have evidence against the criteria for ‘Working Towards the Expected Standard’.

Phonics Intervention Programme ‘STEPS to Success’

Description
This four-day course is a structured and cumulative phonics based literacy programme for children below catch-up level.

Training will include:
  • Good understanding of the English phonic code
  • The principles of inclusion and underlying learning difficulties
  • Working with targets
  • Delivery of a structured, multisensory, cumulative phonics programme
Impact Statement
Pupils:
  • with dyslexia related barriers to learning acquire phonic and spelling skills and knowledge via a structured, cumulative, multisensory learning programme
Practitioners will:
  • benefit from training from experienced dyslexia specialist teachers and understand the best ways to improve reading, spelling and handwriting outcomes

Analysing and Managing Behaviour for Children with an ASD in a School Setting

Description
This course will provide staff with ways to analyse behaviour in children with an ASD, taking into account their specific learning and processing styles. This will lead to discussing practical strategies to manage behaviour in school, including designing behaviour plans and links to school behaviour policies.

It is recommended that LSA’s attend together with the school SENCO, so that strategies can be integrated within school-based behaviour policies and plans. The course will NOT cover handling and restraint management techniques.

A day to:
  • Explore the particular mental health needs most commonly linked to children with an ASD
  • Explore current research in this area, including more vulnerable groups of children
  • Provide participants with resources and strategies to use with this group of students
  • Inform staff how to signpost students/families to external support

Visual Impairment Awareness Training

Description
This course has been run jointly by Bexley and Royal Greenwich for many years. It is a course for teaching assistants who provide direct support for visually impaired and blind children.

The course provides in-depth coverage of the learning needs of VI students, including how to prepare materials, how to safely include VI children in school activities and how to use specialist technologies such as low vision aids, braille, and information about mobility and the use of sighted guides.

The course is normally followed by specific training in schools about the needs of individual children.

Assessment of children with complex needs

Description
The aim of this course is to enable staff to make effective use of ongoing 'formative' assessment as part of the graduated approach.

Attendees will be shown examples of observation-based assessment and how to effectively track small steps of progress for children with complex needs. They will also be given the opportunity to explore how effective assessment informs planning for children with SEND.
