Safer Recruitment

Description
This workshop is the Safer Recruitment Consortium accredited, updated version of the Safer Recruitment training for Headteachers, school Governors and other staff who are likely to sit on interview panels or appoint staff. It is still a requirement for every school appointments panel to include at least one member who has completed the Safer Recruitment training. Course content provides clear explanations of government guidance regarding the safer recruitment process. It also includes an update of the most recent legislation changes (i.e. the Keeping Children Safe in Education – Sept 2019, DBS, Disqualification by Association and other pre-employment checks) that affect Safeguarding and Child Protection. It is recommended that you refresh your training every 5 years.
Impact Statement

Practitioners:
  • Will have an awareness and understanding of offender behaviour
  • Will be able to identify the key features of staff recruitment that helps deter or prevent the appointment of unsuitable people
  • Will be able to consider policies and practices that minimise opportunities for abuse
  • Will begin to review their own and their settings policies and practices, with a view to making them safer

Designated Safeguarding Lead Person training

Description
This course will cover the role and responsibilities of the designated person, context, process and procedures, thresholds for intervention, how to respond to concerns and how to make schools/settings safer. It provides an update on the most recent legislation changes (i.e. Keeping Children Safe in Education - September 2019, Working Together to Safeguard Children, 2018, DBS etc) that affect Safeguarding and Child Protection.
Impact Statement
Pupils
  • Will be safer and have safeguarding needs met in a more appropriate and timely manner
Practitioners:
  • Will understand the child protection role and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead/Person
  • Will know how to deal with difficult conversations and responsibilities
  • Will be able to respond to concerns (initial responses to children and families, making and managing a referral to Children’s Services, contributing to Child Protection Conferences and the Child Protection Plan)

Description
Keeping Children Safe in Education, September 2018 and Government guidance requires refresher training every two years. The course will cover responsibilities of the designated person, new initiatives, issues and challenges of the role. It will provide staff with the opportunity to discuss difficulties/ problems associated with their role and to explore possible solutions. It also provides an update on the most recent legislation changes (i.e. Keeping Children Safe in Education – September 2019, DBS, etc.) that affect Safeguarding and Child Protection.

A Practical Guide to the Schools’ Single Central Record (SCR)

Description
This unique, innovative and practical workshop considers issues around setting up and maintaining the data on the Schools’ SCR in the context of the regulations, guidance and best practice.

Course objectives include:
  • To understand both the regulatory framework and best practice underpinning the format and content of the SCR
  • To consider the categories of staff/workers that should be recorded on the SCR
  • To explore options around format and content of the SCR
  • To equip participants with a practical understanding of all pre-employment checks for school based staff, volunteers, contractors and Agency workers
  • To help participants review their own school SCR and the related pre-employment checking processes
The SCR forms part of the regular Ofsted inspection.

The Role of the Safeguarding Governor

Description
This course will investigate the specific and important role of the Safeguarding Governor, ensuring:
  • the legal requirements are in place and are known and understood by all staff and adults working in your school
  • the expectations of OfSTED are being met and that governors can provide evidence of their compliance
  • the expectations from Keeping Children Safe in Education 2019 are fully understood and embedded
